Topic: Why We Argue and How We Reconcile

Approved for 1.25 SHRM PDC's - HRCI credits pending

What are the sources of workplace disputes and how can we resolve them?  Discord, it seems, is an inevitable part of human existence and—since the workplace is populated with human beings—discord inevitably finds its way into the workplace.  What can we do to understand, manage, and settle disputes?

Dan Klein brings nearly 40 years’ experience in litigating, mediating, and resolving workplace disputes.  He has advised, represented, and resolved disputes involving employees at all levels, from the mail room to the board room.  He currently works full time as a mediator and arbitrator based in Atlanta and Denver.

Dan will delve into some key causes of workplace disputes and the most effective techniques for resolving them.  He’ll discuss:

  • ·         Psychological barriers to objectivity
  • ·         The challenge of “tribalism”
  • ·         Gains and losses, and how we value them differently
  •

Dan will also demonstrate some proven techniques for settling disputes.  These include:

  •      Interest-based negotiation
  •     “Looping”
  •      Brainstorming
  •      Preserving relationships
